Safety Tips for the Holiday Shopping Season

December 23, 2009

The Police Notebook, University of Oklahoma

Have a safe and happy holiday.  Follow these safety tips while shopping.

  1. Always park in a spot where there’s plenty of light and as close to your destination as possible.
  2. If your credit card is stolen, misused or lost, be sure to notify your credit card issuer at once.  In fact, it’s a good idea to keep a complete inventory of your credit cards at home, along with their 800 numbers, just in case.
  3. Try to shop with a friend or family member as two are safer than one.
  4. Place your packages in your trunk or on the floor so they aren’t easily seen.
  5. Leave your most expensive purchases until the end of the day when you can quickly hop in your car and go directly home.
  6. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t approach your car if suspicious characters are lurking about.
  7. Get into the car, lock the doors and exit the area immediately. Criminals prey on shoppers who sit in their cars to make phone calls or review their purchases. If trouble arises, don’t forget to press your blue OnStar button for help.

Connected: Get On The Web In Your Chevy

December 22, 2009

by Alex Luft, GM Authority

You can now turn your Chevy into a Wi-Fi hotspot on wheels. Termed Chevrolet Wi-Fi, the dealer-installed option is made possible by a partnership with Autonet Mobile – a firm that’s been providing the rolling hotspot service since at least 2007.

Here’s how it works: you opt for Chevrolet Wi-Fi (either online or at your Chevy dealer) and your dealer installs the Autonet router and docking station. You then whip out your laptop or mobile device (such as an iPod Touch or any other Wi-Fi-equipped gizmo) and connect to the hotspot – just as you would at home. The router connects to the celluar network through an EVDO connection (the same technology used by Verizon, Sprint, and Metro PCS in the United States) and can achieve speeds up to 1.5 mpbs (mega bits per second). It also uses TRU technology to maintain a connection while the vehicle is in motion, allowing for uninterrupted service. Chevrolet Wi-Fi can provide access to several devices at once, enabling multiple passengers to use the connection for their separate gadgets.

The occupants then have the ability to connect to the Internet and do all the things the web offers. Here are some real-world uses of having access to the Web in your car: for families, Chevrolet Wi-Fi allows kids and students to research homework topics on the way home, connect to friends and family on social sites, and watch videos on long drives. When it comes to worksite uses, the Wi-Fi connection offers immediate access to everything on the Web, from access to online ordering sites, municipal sites with permit and building code information, and more!

Chevrolet Wi-Fi is certified with the following new Chevrolet Models:

Equinox
Traverse
Silverado
Tahoe
Suburba
Avalanche
Express
One unique use-case scenario that we (the GM Authority crew) thought of when discussing Chevrolet Wi-Fi is its possible use as a back-up for the traditional in-home Internet connection: if (when?) your home connection is down, Chevrolet Wi-Fi can serve as a back-up internet access point.

Additional docking stations can be purchased separately, enabling customers to easily move the Chevrolet Wi-Fi router from vehicle to vehicle. We’re not sure whether Chevy has any plans to offer the Wi-Fi on any other Chevy models, such as its entire sedan line-up (Volt, Cruze, Aveo, Malibu, Impala), the Camaro or Corvette, or make the feature available in its other brands (Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Opel/Vauxhall, or Holden) – but it would sure make sense to do so.

Through December 31, Chevrolet Wi-Fi is available for $199 after a $200 mail-in-rebate with a two-year service agreement (retail price before rebates is $399). It can be purchased online at GMExtras.com or at your local Chevy dealer. As far as we know, this is US-only for now and can only run when the vehicle’s battery and/or engine are activated.

Eyes on the road, people!

NOTE: Apple Chevrolet can install the Autonet unit in ANY vehicle for you. Call our Parts and Accessories Department at 708-429-3000.

2010 Chevrolet Equinox named Urban Truck of the Year

December 22, 2009

DETROIT – Today, the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox was named the Urban Truck of the Year by On Wheels Media. The Equinox was selected as the best new truck for urban and suburban drivers by On Wheels Media and an independent panel of 15 automotive journalists.

Randi Payton, On Wheels Media’s president and publisher said, “The Urban Vehicle of the Year resonates with the majority of new car buyers who live in urban and suburban areas, who drive on crowded road conditions. The vehicles chosen are cost and fuel efficient, and have the performance and safety characteristics that are relevant to the consumers in Metropolitan areas.”

Chevrolet will accept the award for Best Urban Truck of the Year at the 14th Annual Urban Wheel Awards, January 12, 2010, during the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

“We are very proud to be recognized as the Urban Truck of the Year,” says Jim Campbell, Chevrolet General Manager. “Urban Truck of the Year panelists select their favorite vehicle based on factors such as safety, fuel efficiency, performance and affordability. Those are the same factors that our customers rate as key reasons they purchased an Equinox. In fact, the Equinox has been such as hit with customers that we added a third shift at CAMI assembly – and are still struggling to meet demand.”

The Urban Truck of the Year winner is selected by a panel of 15 automotive journalists from a broad array of newspapers, magazines, broadcast and Internet outlets. This year’s panelists include:

  • Brian Armstead – Autosense
  • Frank Aukofer – Scripps-Howard News Service

GM hires Microsoft vet as finance chief

December 22, 2009

Christine Tierney / The Detroit News

General Motors Co. Chairman and CEO Edward Whitacre Jr. reached outside the auto industry to recruit a new chief financial officer from software giant Microsoft Corp.’s senior ranks.

Microsoft CFO Christopher Liddell, 51, will become vice chairman and CFO of GM in Whitacre’s latest move to speed up a cultural transformation at the struggling U.S. automaker.

With Liddell’s appointment, announced Monday, GM hopes to improve its financial management, which was criticized by members of President Barack Obama’s auto task force as being among the worst they’d seen at a large corporation.

Liddell brings impressive experience and qualifications to GM: He holds a degree in engineering, ran a big forest products company in his native New Zealand and, as CFO of Microsoft, helped draft a $3 billion cost-cutting plan.

“Chris brings a depth and experience to this job that were unmatched in our search for a new financial leader,” Whitacre said in a statement.

Liddell is Whitacre’s first major hire since he pushed out former CEO Fritz Henderson on Dec. 1 after the two clashed repeatedly. GM also was seeking a replacement for CFO Ray Young during the critical period leading up to a public stock offering within the next two years. Young will move to China to be vice president of international operations.

With his background, Liddell will be much more than a numbers-cruncher, said longtime auto analyst Maryann Keller of Maryann Keller and Associates in Stamford, Conn. “There are CFOs who are sort of nitty-gritty numbers guys, and then there are CFOs who are really partners in the strategic and business management of the company — and I think that’s what he is.”

As a GM vice chairman and CFO, Liddell will have a clear shot at succeeding Whitacre, 68, who has said he does not want to be a long-term chief executive.

Liddell apparently doesn’t want to be a long-term CFO, either. Microsoft said last month that Liddell would leave at the end of the year to seek “opportunities that will expand his career beyond being a CFO.”

Liddell faces enormous challenges at GM. As the top financial executive, he will manage the repayment of GM’s federal loans, which Whitacre wants done by July, and prepare the automaker, now controlled by the U.S. government, to issue public shares.

“This is a great situation for him,” said David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor. “You never want to come into a company when it’s flying high. You want to come into a company when it’s turning around because that’s when you can achieve something.”

GM is now hampered in its hiring efforts by government-imposed limits on what it can pay executives, but they stand to make a lot of money if they can turn the company around.

“Whatever compensation these people are getting,” Cole said, “when this company goes public, the officers will make an absolute ton of money.”

The fact that Liddell is an outsider “is a plus,” Keller said.

“The auto industry is so insular. The fact that all three (U.S. auto) companies are based in southern Michigan prevented the kind of thinking and access to new ideas that might have prevented them from getting into the kind of trouble they got into.”

This year, GM and Chrysler LLC — now Chrysler Group LLC — went into bankruptcy to shed costs they’d taken on in generous labor contracts and other financially unwise accords. In the four years leading up to its bankruptcy, GM lost more than $80 billion.

Ford Motor Co., which looked outside the industry when it hired Boeing Co. executive Alan Mulally to be CEO in 2006, has fared better. Ford avoided bankruptcy after mortgaging its assets to bolster its cash position before the industry plunged into a horrendous downturn late last year.

In contrast to Detroit’s Big Three, which are losing ground globally, Microsoft is one of the strongest players in its industry.

“In the software space, they’re regarded as best in class,” said Zeus Kerravala, a technology analyst at Boston-based Yankee Group. He said “an attitude of winning” permeates Microsoft.

The Redmond, Wash.-based giant is innovative and aggressive in the marketplace, but is financially conservative, said Jon Oltsik, senior principal analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, a technology analysis firm in Milford, Mass.

“They’re cost-conscious, but not afraid to invest in things they need to invest in,” Oltsik said. “It’s a company where the CFO has a pretty strong management role.”

Handling the Toughest Driving Conditions

December 21, 2009

Apple Newsletter, December 2009

Simple steps to help deal with dicey roads.

Winter presents many challenges for vehicle owners, not the least of which are lower temperatures, longer nights and changeable road conditions. Added together, the months ahead are certain to produce their share of frustrations.

Fortunately, there are some preparatory steps drivers can take to better equip their vehicles – and themselves.

One of the most important and most often overlooked aspects of vehicle preparation is the selection of the proper tires. Many drivers are under the impression that all-season tires are capable of handling both summer and winter driving while “snow” tires or winter tires are reserved for those who reside in regions of the country where accumulated white stuff is a daily fact of life. You may be surprised to learn that all-season rubber isn’t formulated to handle low temperatures in the same way that winter rubber is. Once the mercury starts to drop, all-season tires begin to stiffen up and lose the grip that is so critical to maintaining stability while driving. In fact, below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, vehicles equipped with all-season tires take an average of 30 percent more distance to come to a complete stop than those sporting winter tires. At temperatures below the freezing point, this number is magnified significantly, even in the complete absence of snow. If you live in an area where temperatures routinely drop below this level, you should seriously consider investing in a set of winter tires.

There are a few other safety considerations that can make a difference in your winter bliss behind the wheel. Most of the fluids in your vehicle, like gasoline, oil and those found in the transmission will be content to operate in colder temperatures. Fluids that contain water, however, should be checked in order to make sure they can withstand a serious chill. The windshield washer reservoir should be filled with a fluid that is advertised as containing enough alcohol to avoid turning into a solid overnight – an easy enough change to make. Radiator fluid is a little more complicated, as it requires a test to ensure that it is still capable of protecting your engine without freezing at low temperatures. Your dealer’s service department is well equipped to ensure all your vehicle’s fluids are winter-ready.

After the hazards presented by the freezing cold, corrosion is often the next most-cited concern by drivers worried about how their vehicles will react to all of the moisture and the road treatments meant to deal with slippery travel. Road salt itself is not such a bad thing for a vehicle’s steel panels, floors and frame, but when combined with moisture, it can really do a number on a car or truck’s structural integrity. A good strategy for combating the corrosive effects of road salt is to blast it off your car’s exterior and undercarriage periodically at a carwash, either a touchless unit or a “wash it yourself” installation that uses high pressure hoses. If you have a heated garage with good drainage, then you can even do this at home.

For areas where road salt is used as liberally as possible, you may want to consider a form of undercoating to act as a barrier between the chemical and your car or truck’s steel. There are many different types of undercoating out there. Make sure to do your research before choosing a particular type of undercoating – some are so thick that over time, they can trap moisture and salt between the coating and the floor and actually increase corrosion. Sometimes even a light spraying of oil on the underside of exposed panels can form enough of a moisture barrier to keep your car safe.

There is no doubt that winter is the roughest season of all when it comes to car care and driver sanity, but with a little preparation, you can sleep better at night knowing that you’ve done your best to protect your vehicle from the worst winter has to offer.

Tax Deductions On New Cars Ends December 31st

December 19, 2009

From CATA (Chicago Automobile Trade Association)

The “cash for clunkers” program grabbed the headlines earlier this year. But another government program in effect until Dec. 31 can put money in the pockets of new-car buyers.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, in effect since February, gives consumers incentive to buy a new vehicle now.  Many car buyers can deduct state and local taxes paid on the purchase of a new passenger vehicle from their federal income tax.

Deductions are allowed for:

  • the first $49,500 of a vehicle’s purchase price;
  • vehicles that weigh less than 8,500 pounds; and
  • taxpayers whose modified gross income is under $125,000 for individuals or $250,000 for jointly filed returns.

The tax deduction can be claimed on a new vehicle of any model year – when the original use commences with the taxpayer.

Consumers who have questions about the tax dedcution may call any sales representative at Apple Chevrolet at 708-429-3000 or send an email request to sales@applechevy.com.

Chevy tops on AutoTrader.com year-end report

December 16, 2009

ATLANTA, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ – Chevy was a big winner in the new car space during 2009, with the Chevy Camaro capturing the No. 1 most-viewed new car spot in 2009 and Chevy ranking as the most-viewed new vehicle brand on AutoTrader.com in 2009, according to the Year-End AutoTrader.com Trend Engine Report. The Camaro grabbed the No. 1 most viewed spot from 2008’s most-viewed vehicle, the new Honda Accord, which fell from No. 1 in 2008 to No. 4 in 2009. Rounding out the top five most-viewed new vehicles on AutoTrader.com in 2009 were the Ford F-150 at No. 2, the Ford Mustang at No. 3 and the Chevy Silverado at No. 5.

The biggest new-car jump on the AutoTrader.com top 20 new car list was the redesigned Nissan 370Z, which jumped from No. 96 in 2008 to No. 19 in 2009. Other year-over-year new-car jumps were made by the Dodge Challenger, up from No. 29 in 2008 to No. 10 in 2009 and the Volkswagen Jetta, up from No. 32 in 2008 to No. 18 in 2009.

In a tough year for new car sales and marketing, Hyundai and Kia made aggressive marketing moves that paid off in increased views of their brands on AutoTrader.com’s new car top 20.
